Gutter Repair & Cleaning

Re-seal leaking joints, rebuild sagging runs, replace damaged sections, and clear seasonal debris.

What We Do

Gutter Repair & Cleaning

Gutter repair for leaking joints, sagging hangers, damaged sections, and clogged systems. We re-seal with high-quality polyurethane sealant (not silicone caulk that fails in two seasons), reset hangers to proper pitch, and clear debris. Twice-yearly cleaning programs available for properties with heavy tree cover.

Most gutter problems we see aren't catastrophic — they're slow failures from accumulated debris, failed sealant, and hangers that have lost their grip. The fix isn't always replacement. A 15-year-old aluminum gutter system with sagging runs and leaking corners can usually be brought back to 10+ more years of service through a proper repair-and-reseal pass plus a scheduled cleaning program.

Repair-vs-replace gets decided by three things: condition of the aluminum or steel itself (sound or corroded through), fascia condition behind the gutter (a rotted fascia means rebuild before reattaching anything), and the math on cumulative repair cost vs new install. When 30%+ of the run needs section replacement and the fascia needs rebuild, full replacement is usually the right call. Otherwise, repair pays for itself.

What typically fails on an NJ gutter system

Leaking corner miters and end caps. The most common failure. Original installers used silicone caulk that hardens and cracks within 2-3 seasons. We strip the old caulk completely, clean the metal, and reseal with polyurethane (Sika 1A) — stays flexible 15-20 years.

Sagging runs from failed hangers. Spike-and-ferrule installs (the old surface-mounted pin through the gutter into the fascia) loosen as wood fascia compresses under freeze-thaw. We replace with hidden-hanger brackets every 24" — internal aluminum brackets that screw into solid framing, not just the face of the fascia.

Pitch loss from wood movement. Even a properly pitched gutter loses its slope as the fascia and rafter tails settle over 15-20 years. We reset every run with a laser level, restore 1/4" per 10' minimum slope toward the downspouts.

Downspout disconnects. Often the elbows pull apart from ice expansion or yard equipment impact. We refasten with stainless screws and seal joints with polyurethane.

Clogged runs and downspouts. Leaves, pine needles, shingle granules, and dirt. A clogged gutter can hold 40-80 lbs of standing water in a heavy rain, tearing hangers loose and back-rotting the fascia. Cleaning is preventive maintenance, not optional.

Dented and twisted sections from ladder damage, fallen branches, ice slides. Localized damage gets section-replaced and color-matched; if the entire elevation is damaged, full replacement is more economical than piecemeal section work.

Cleaning programs — what we actually do

Twice-yearly cleaning (spring and fall) is the right cadence for most NJ properties with normal tree cover. Properties under heavy oak, maple, or pine canopy may need quarterly cleaning. We schedule recurring cleans so they happen without you having to remember.

A proper clean is more than removing debris. We physically hand-clean every gutter (not just blow it out with a leaf blower, which packs debris into the downspout outlet), flush each downspout with a hose to verify drainage, inspect every hanger for movement, check sealant condition at corners and end caps, and photograph any issues found.

Each clean ends with a one-page condition report: photos, any new issues noted, recommended repair scope if anything has degraded. This documentation supports warranty claims on premium gutter systems and protects fascia warranties on James Hardie and similar siding installs that require gutters to remain functional.

We use ladder stabilizers on every clean — never lean a ladder directly on the gutter. Leaning weights are what bend the front edge of an otherwise-sound gutter and break the seal at corners.

Gutter guards — when they're worth it

Gutter guards reduce cleaning frequency, not eliminate it. Even the best micromesh system needs annual rinse-off to prevent pollen and shingle granules from building a surface layer that sheds water over the front edge instead of through the mesh.

Hood-style guards (LeafGuard, Gutter Helmet) are the most expensive but the most effective at keeping leaves out. They use surface tension to pull water in through a narrow slot while leaves slide off. Downside: limited capacity in extreme rain — water can overshoot in heavy thunderstorms.

Micromesh guards (GutterGlove, Leaf Filter, MasterShield) sit on top of the gutter with stainless mesh fine enough to block shingle granules and pine needles. Easier retrofit than hood systems, less expensive, but require periodic surface cleaning.

Reverse-curve guards (the surface-tension style) work well on moderate-pitch shingle roofs but underperform on steeper pitches where water hits the guard fast enough to overshoot.

We don't install foam-insert or brush-style guards — they hold debris, retain moisture, and accelerate gutter corrosion. They're the kind of upsell you see at home shows; we don't sell them.

Materials We Use

Polyurethane sealant (Sika 1A)
Single-component polyurethane for resealing corner miters, end caps, and outlets. Stays flexible 15-20 years under UV. Replaces failed silicone caulk that most original installers used.
Hidden-hanger replacement brackets
Internal aluminum brackets that screw through gutter back into fascia framing every 24". Replace failed spike-and-ferrule hangers from older installs.
Color-matched seamless gutter section
Section replacement run on-site with our gutter machine in the matching profile and color. Eliminates the visible seam of a sectional patch job.
LeafGuard / GutterGlove / micromesh guard systems
Three different gutter-guard categories we install when site conditions justify them. We don't install foam-insert or brush guards — they hold moisture and accelerate corrosion.
Stainless steel screws + downspout straps
Replace failed aluminum or galvanized fasteners. Standard on shore-county work; standard for any downspout reattachment regardless of location.
PVC drain tie-in fittings
When extending downspouts into buried drainage during a repair pass — schedule 40 PVC with proper grade, tied to daylight or dry well.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Gutter Repair & Cleaning in NJ

What does a gutter repair cost?+
Repair pricing depends on scope — resealing corners is the smallest job; full hanger replacement plus pitch reset on a complete elevation is the largest. Most NJ residential repair jobs fall between a 1-hour visit (single corner reseal) and a half-day (full system reseal + hanger reset). Every repair quote is free and broken out line-by-line.
How often should gutters be cleaned in NJ?+
Twice a year minimum for properties with normal tree cover (one spring clean, one fall clean after leaf drop). Heavy oak, maple, or pine canopy: quarterly. Properties with no overhanging trees: once a year is usually enough. We offer cleaning programs that schedule visits automatically — you don't have to remember to call.
Should I reseal my gutters or replace them?+
Repair makes sense when the aluminum is sound, the fascia behind it is solid, and the issues are concentrated in sealant failure and hanger loss. Replacement makes sense when 30%+ of the run needs section replacement, the fascia needs rebuild, the gutters are corroded through, or the system is sectional (not seamless) and has multiple ongoing joint leaks. We give you both quotes and an honest recommendation.
Why did the silicone caulk fail on my gutters?+
Silicone caulk hardens and shrinks under UV exposure. On exterior gutter joints — full sun, freeze-thaw cycles, expansion and contraction — silicone typically fails at 5-7 years. We use polyurethane (Sika 1A) which stays flexible and holds 15-20 years. If your gutters were sealed with clear or white silicone, they're due for a reseal regardless of visible leaks.
Can you install gutter guards on my existing gutters?+
Usually yes, as long as the existing gutters are sound. We install LeafGuard hood-style, GutterGlove micromesh, and other top-tier systems on existing gutters in good condition. If the gutters are leaking or sagging, those issues get fixed first — guards on a leaking system just hide the problem. We won't install foam-insert or brush-style guards — they hold debris and rot the aluminum from inside.
What's a cleaning program and how does it work?+
Recurring scheduled cleaning visits — typically spring and fall, sometimes quarterly for heavy tree cover. We auto-schedule the visits, hand-clean every gutter, flush downspouts, inspect for new issues, and email a one-page condition report after each visit. Most clients prepay annually; emergency calls between scheduled visits get prioritized response. Saves the cost of one major fascia rot repair every 5-10 years.
