GAF vs CertainTeed vs Owens Corning in NJ
Head-to-head 2026 NJ comparison of the three biggest shingle brands across standard, premium designer, and luxury tiers. From a GAF-Certified installer who installs all three.
GAF, CertainTeed, and Owens Corning are the three biggest residential shingle brands in North America — between them they hold roughly 65% of the US market. NJ homeowners shortlisting often google "GAF vs CertainTeed vs Owens Corning" expecting one to be objectively better. The honest answer is more nuanced: each brand wins different tier matchups, and the bigger factor is installer credentialing than brand selection.
3 tiers, 3 brands compared
1. Standard architectural (3-tab replacement)
GAF
Timberline HDZ
$5.50–$7.50/sq ft installed
GAF's flagship architectural shingle. LayerLock technology for nailing zone. Most-installed architectural shingle in North America. StainGuard Plus algae resistance.
CertainTeed
Landmark
$5.25–$7.00/sq ft installed
CertainTeed's competitive entry. Reliable performance, available in NJ at most lumber yards. Streak Fighter algae resistance.
Owens Corning
Duration / Duration Premium
$5.75–$7.75/sq ft installed
Owens Corning's SureNail technology — granule-bonded nailing strip for wind resistance. Slightly thicker than competitors.
Verdict: GAF Timberline HDZ on installer availability (most NJ crews train on it); Owens Corning Duration on wind resistance (130 mph standard); CertainTeed Landmark on price (~5% lower than GAF).
2. Premium designer (dimensional/shadow-line)
GAF
Timberline UHDZ / Camelot II
$7.50–$10.50/sq ft installed
Heavier-profile shingles with deeper shadow lines. Camelot II has true slate-look profile. UHDZ is ultra-high-definition Timberline.
CertainTeed
Presidential Shake / Grand Manor
$8.00–$12.00/sq ft installed
Presidential Shake mimics cedar shake; Grand Manor is luxury triple-laminate slate-look. Most expensive CertainTeed line.
Owens Corning
TruDefinition Duration Designer
$7.25–$9.50/sq ft installed
Owens Corning's premium offering. Bolder color blends; SureNail at every fastener point.
Verdict: CertainTeed Presidential Shake on cedar-look aesthetic; GAF Camelot II on slate-look + warranty class; Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Designer on color options.
3. Premium luxury / hand-laid simulation
GAF
Glenwood / Slateline
$10.50–$14.50/sq ft installed
GAF's highest-end shingles. Glenwood is luxury dimensional; Slateline mimics natural slate profile most convincingly.
CertainTeed
Symphony / Carriage House
$11.00–$16.00/sq ft installed
CertainTeed's polymer composite slate alternative. 50-year warranty. Often spec'd on premium historic restorations as slate alternative.
Owens Corning
Berkshire
$10.00–$13.50/sq ft installed
Owens Corning's luxury shingle with hand-crafted aesthetic. Heaviest weight class.
Verdict: All three are strong; CertainTeed Symphony for the most slate-like aesthetic; GAF Glenwood for warranty class; Owens Corning Berkshire for traditional New England aesthetic.

Brand decision questions
Which brand has the longest warranty?
All three offer 'limited lifetime' material warranties on architectural shingles — the differences are in the workmanship coverage and warranty class tiers. GAF Golden Pledge (Master Elite installer required) is widely considered the strongest residential shingle warranty in NJ. GAF System Plus (Certified installer required) is a close second. CertainTeed SureStart Plus and Owens Corning Platinum Protection are comparable to GAF System Plus when properly registered. Important reality: warranty value depends more on the installer credential class than the brand name.
Is GAF really better than CertainTeed or Owens Corning?
Not objectively. GAF has the largest NJ installer network (more contractors trained on their spec) and the most-spec'd warranty tiers. CertainTeed Landmark performs comparably at slightly lower price. Owens Corning has better wind-resistance specs (SureNail technology). The 'best' brand for your project is the one your installer is certified for at the appropriate tier. We're GAF Certified and install GAF Timberline HDZ as our default — but we install CertainTeed and Owens Corning when the homeowner prefers them or the project specifies.
What's special about GAF certification specifically?
GAF Certified means the contractor has met GAF's training, insurance, and reputation requirements to be authorized to install GAF systems and register the GAF System Plus warranty (which extends material coverage from limited-lifetime to 50-year non-prorated, plus adds tear-off labor coverage on a covered claim). Only ~3% of US roofing contractors are GAF-Certified or above. We hold this credential — verify at gaf.com. The next tier up is Master Elite (top 2%); we're working toward that.
Do algae-resistant shingles really work?
Yes, dramatically. GAF StainGuard Plus, CertainTeed Streak Fighter, and Owens Corning Algae Resistance all use copper-granule infusion to inhibit gloeocapsa magma growth (the black streaks). Properly-installed AR shingles show minimal staining at 10-15 years vs. heavy streaking on non-AR shingles in the same time. All three brands offer AR as standard on most modern lines — non-AR is increasingly rare in the major brand lineups. Cost adder is minimal ($0–$0.30/sq ft over non-AR). Always spec AR on NJ roofs.
What about off-brand shingles (IKO, Atlas, Tamko, Malarkey)?
All four are legitimate alternatives. IKO Dynasty is comparable to GAF Timberline HDZ at slightly lower price; very strong in NJ. Atlas Pinnacle is competitive with CertainTeed Landmark. Tamko Heritage has been around 75+ years; reliable mid-tier. Malarkey Vista is newer to NJ but strong on impact resistance. The 'big 3' (GAF, CertainTeed, OC) have the deepest installer networks and most-recognized brand recognition for resale, but technical specs are similar across all majors.
Should I just go with whatever the cheapest contractor recommends?
No. The cheapest contractor will recommend whatever they get the best deal on — not necessarily what's best for your roof. Independent decision: pick the brand + line + warranty tier that fits your stay-time and budget, then find a contractor certified for that brand at the right tier. Don't let the contractor pick the brand — that puts the contractor's economics ahead of your roof's lifespan.
